Instructions

  1. Add the protein shake to a blender.
  2. Add frozen strawberries, frozen bok choy, spirulina powder, and glycine powder if using.
  3. Add ice.
  4. Blend on high until thick and smooth. The bok choy should be completely pulverized — no visible leaf pieces. If the consistency is too thick, add a splash of water. If too thin, add more ice.
  5. Pour and drink immediately. Spirulina oxidizes once exposed to air, so this is not a make-ahead item.

Add 1/2 tsp matcha powder alongside the spirulina. Matcha contributes EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), L-theanine, and chlorophyll. It also delivers iron and B12, though the B12 bioavailability from spirulina is debated. Consider it supplementary, not primary.

Glycine (optional) is the simplest amino acid and a collagen precursor. It also acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter and supports glutathione synthesis. One teaspoon (about 5g) is tasteless in a chocolate smoothie.

Bok choy over spinach — same rationale as the batch preps. Low oxalate means the calcium (290mg in this smoothie) is absorbed. Spinach would look better on the label but deliver less in practice.
